Asian American Hotel Owners Association
For Bharat “Bruce" Patel, doing what’s easy is not as desirable as doing what’s right. It’s a philosophy that guides him in his business as well as in his civic initiatives.
Patel owns a portfolio that includes more than a dozen franchised and independent hotels, plus other business ventures. He is a second generation hotelier who started learning about hotel operations in 1997 at properties owned by his parents, performing duties in every department from housekeeping to maintenance to the front desk.
This “hands on” experience gave Patel a solid foundation of skills as well as a strong appreciation for the hotel business. Soon, he aggressively took over the operation of two of his family’s hotels in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, increasing RevPAR by more than 20 percent in one year. He also got involved in the development of more than a half dozen hotel projects in Texas.
Patel went on to develop and operate numerous limited-service hotels, as well as to consult on more than $250 million in transactions with major hotel companies.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Dallas, Patel attended the University of Houston, where he earned an undergraduate degree in hotel and restaurant management. He then earned an M.B.A. in strategic management from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Patel isn’t just a man of commerce—he is a man of the community. For more than 15 years, he has been involved with various charitable and community organizations so he can make a difference in the lives of people. Giving back, combined with other life values such as integrity, disciplined hard work, caring for your fellow man, and caring for the planet—were among of the qualities instilled by his father, A.V. Patel, who served as AAHOA Treasurer in 1999.
A Lifetime Member of AAHOA, Patel is especially passionate about advocacy and government affairs, raising public awareness of the association, and increasing mentorship and leadership by second and third generation hoteliers.
He and his wife, Millie, live in the Dallas suburb of Irving. Patel is determined to make a real and lasting impact on the hospitality industry, and with his unique blend of confidence and humility, he is succeeding.
