Today, cities and municipalities in the United States are recognizing the economic and social benefits of becoming welcoming communities and fostering a welcoming culture. Cities are developing welcoming agendas that look to attract and retain a global workforce and maximize the local economic development and growth opportunities that newcomers bring.

  • Mayor James F. Kenney, City of Philadelphia

    A lifelong City resident, Mayor Jim Kenney grew up the oldest of four children in a South Philadelphia rowhome. On January 4, 2016, Jim was sworn in as the 99th Mayor of Philadelphia. In his first budget, the Mayor worked closely with City Council to fund bold anti-poverty initiatives. The initiatives included the expansion of quality pre-k, the creation of community schools, and investing in parks, rec centers, and libraries. These initiatives were possible because Philadelphia became the first major city to pass a tax on sweetened beverages.

  • Mayor Régis Labeaume, Québec City

    Mayor Régis Labeaume was elected as the 37th Mayor of Quebec City in December 2007. He was re-elected in 2009, 2013 and 2017. Throughout his professional career, Régis Labeaume has been involved in the social and cultural life of Québec City and its metropolitan area in addition to being a member of several boards including Festival d’été de Québec and Hydro-Québec.

Howard Ross is a lifelong social justice advocate, Founder of Cook Ross, and Principal of Udarta Consulting. He is considered one of the world’s seminal thought leaders on identifying and addressing Unconscious Bias.  Howard authored the Washington Post best seller, Everyday Bias:  Identifying and Navigating Unconscious Judgments in Our Daily Lives (published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2014) and ReInventing Diversity: Transforming Organizational Community to Strengthen People, Purpose and Performance, (published by Rowman and Littlefield in conjunction with SHRM in 2011).  

His current book, Our Search for Belonging:  How the Need for Connection is Tearing Our Culture Apart, was published by Berrett-Koehler in 2018, and will be available for purchase and signing at the conference.
